1740 was the year of birth of a noble Parisian named Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, who became known for all posterity as the Marquis de Sade. For this man, who was imprisoned several times for his indecent behavior, sensuality went hand in hand with literature, as evidenced by the numerous works left behind after his death. The freethinking writer and sexual reprobate would probably have approved of the fragrance named for him, its thick, syrupy immortelle leather, hay, patchouli, and davana staking out a very sensual interpretation of leather.
