Slow Explosions is a tart rose, saffron and apple leather scent with a hint of buttery musks beneath, inspired by the fictional story of Gwen K. Vroomen, a writer who went to India on a whim and found herself both challenged and enthralled by the new. The story is as follows: "In 1980, Gwen K. Vroomen quit a monotonous job, went to the corner bar, and - on the bartender's urging - threw a dart at a world map tacked on the wall. She had never heard of Goa but knew immediately she needed to go. Three months later she was celebrating Hindu New Year at a tea garden high in the hills of Kerala, fireworks exploding below. She wrote of that night: "I was resuscitated by color, redeemed by the vibrant unknown." Her self-proclaimed "Journey out of darkness," dotted with unforgettable stories of night markets, river floats, and harrowing moped rides, inspired a generation of young Americans eager to buck the drudgery of ordinary life." Slow Explosions, the fragrance, opens with a huge, bright saffron note that smells like roses dipped in iodine and ink, stretching across a sky of woody musks. A sweet-n-sour green apple joins with the rose and saffron to create a very buttery, supple Italian leather note that smells just like the inside of the sort of travel case one might pack for a far off adventure like Gwen's. The drydown seems to dawdle forever in a fugue state of peppery musks and smoky, drawn-out resins. Beautiful and dreamy, its sharp spice and fruit nonetheless keeps us tethered to reality.
