Serge Lutens – Collection Noire – Dent de Lait
Forget the rather disturbing imagery – this is a scent made to capture the frothy innocence of childhood. And it does so successfully, by pairing an effervescent almond milk note with the smoky, metallic nuances of Somalian incense. Aldehydes push the bitter almond notes upwards, like bubbles in a glass of carbonated milk, where they join with a greenish coconut accord and the purple, cherry pie fluffiness of heliotrope.
Dent de Lait is both milky-soft and green-bitter, displaying a remarkable freshness in among all the dulcet, almondy notes. In other words, it is an innocent scent, but also one with firm character – the mischievous sparkle in a child’s eye when they are up to no good. The resins in the base of the scent are smoky, but also clean and powdery, with a metallic zing that feels less reverential than the normal liturgical frankincense. “Exhausted by the wobbling of his milk teeth for weeks, the young wolf is afraid to move from milk to blood. I loved you all the long time, I never want to miss you.” Serge Lutens
