Amber Oud is not the sledgehammer synth oud you might be expecting – instead, it charts a refined course through a field of lavender, herbs, and spiced sandalwood before ending up in a deliciously warm and inviting vanilla-labdanum base accord that’s something of a De Nicolai signature (a dry, spicy resinous vanilla touched by the hot coal of burning incense and the sultry tobacco warmth of tonka bean).

Nicely herbal all the way through, the lavender shines a torch through the denser materials, making sure we linger but don’t ever bogged down in the darkness of agarwood. If the dirty lavender-vanilla-civet combination of Jicky appeals to you, then think of Amber Oud as the De Nicolai take on the genre.
