Humiecki & Graef – Askew
Askew is a fragrance inspired by the destructive forces of nature that sometimes produce new life so thrilling that one forgives it the fury that went on before. For this fragrance, the perfumers took vetiver, that classic stalwart of male perfumery, broke it up, smashed it into fragments, and then reassembled it along the lines of a cubist painting, the top arranged at the bottom and the sides switched out.
As the smashed vetiver was being reassembled, the creators added in smoky birch tar to approximate the smell of burning that accompanies destruction, and softer notes such as Guatemalan cardamom, soft leather, ginger, Egyptian mimosa and grapefruit. It is a strangely moving fragrance, encompassing the aromas of life and death as they travel along the never-ending loop of destruction and creation.
