État Libre d’Orange – Attaquer le Soleil Marquis de Sade
Despite the roaring belligerence of the name – attack the sun! Invoke the name of a notoriously cruel man! – the olfactory surprise of this fragrance is that it is actually a very gentle resin scent that will turn one’s gaze inwards towards the soul and towards the dark corners of the cathedral during High Mass. The only note listed for Attaquer le Soleil is labdanum, and certainly, the presence of this resin is strong, with its tarry, dusty, and leathery sides on display, as well as a toffee-like sweetness that marks out its amber credentials. But we also sense a smoky, austere frankincense here, leavening the sticky labdanum with a shot of pure, churchy pine-like resinousness. Medicinal and piercing at first, it soon levels out into a low hum of church dust and smoke that will set the soul at ease.
Notes: labdanum, possibly frankincense, benzoin
